If you have yet to work it out, this is a website devoted to the photography of (myself) Kathleen Renard. Although I am a person who takes photos I do not view myself as a photographer per se, but as a person who uses photography as a visual mode of expression. My work is frequently political; I like to make a statement, shock, critique and question. Artistically I prefer “the dark side of life”, and I often use black humour and the macabre in my work. I draw inspiration from such artists as Cindy Sherman, Barbara Krugar,Robert Mapplethorpe, Joel Peter Witkins, Nan Goldin and the topic and areas that I am interested in range from hedonism, mortality, capitalism/ anti-capitalism, feminism, consumerism, to the visual representation of the female and male body in popular culture and the ideologies and norms associated with gender and sexuality.

I prefer analogue to digital photography, but I do like to be flexible and I will use whatever photographic technique that I believe will best demonstrate what I am trying to say. I have used a variety of cameras and printing techniques, I have used, large format 5 x 4, medium format, 35mm digital and analogue, polaroid and pinhole cameras.

I have been always been interested in photography, but it was not until I decided to do a Diploma of Applied Photography at Photographic Imaging College in 2005 (check out the blog), that I considered it an area that I could express myself artistically. Since then I have taken part in four group exhibitions, at Glen Eira City Council Gallery 2005, 2006 Kodak Autumn Salon at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, “Untitled 24” Dantes Upstairs 2006, Glen Eira City Council Gallery 2006.
